Health marketplace PA options
As of November 1, 2020, Pennsylvania runs its own health insurance exchange called the Pennsylvania Insurance Exchange (Pennie). Pennsylvanians use this website instead of Healthcare.gov to purchase and enroll in the available health care plans.
There are platinum, gold, silver, and bronze plans which offer different tiers of coverage at different prices. There are also various structures to how the health insurance plans work. The four main types are as follows:
Health Maintenance Organization (HMO): A network of physicians, hospitals, and other providers who have contracted to accept a certain level of payment for their services. Each plan member must have a primary care doctor who makes referrals to specialists.
Exclusive Provider Organization (EPO): A managed care plan covers services only from the physicians and hospitals within the plan’s network, except for emergencies.
Preferred Provider Organization (PPO): This plan is similar to an HMO in that it offers a network of healthcare providers to choose from who have agreed to a certain rate of pay. It also offers coverage for providers outside the network but at a higher cost to the insured.
Point of Service (POS): This plan is a combination of an HMO and a PPO. The policyholder has an in-network primary care doctor and must be referred to specialists, and it provides out-of-network coverage at a higher cost than in-network services.
