New legislation signed in July of 2019 created a state-based marketplace called Pennie for Pennsylvanians to shop for and enroll in health insurance coverage. Pennie replaces the federal program, healthcare.gov, and Pennie health insurance plans are more affordable and accessible.
Who is eligible for Pennie health insurance plans?
If you don’t have health care coverage through your employer or Medicare, Pennie is your resource for health insurance. All Pennsylvania residents who are either citizens or U.S. nationals, or those who hold a qualified immigration status can enroll in health coverage through Pennie.
What about financial assistance?
The American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 allows many Pennsylvanians eligibility for financial assistance, such as advance premium tax credits (APTC). This assistance could lower your monthly premiums.
Types of Pennie plans
There are three levels of health insurance plans offered through Pennie. Depending on what is offered in your area, you may have access to the following plans:
- Gold plans have the highest monthly premium costs, but they provide the highest level of coverage for the health care services you use.
- Silver plans fall in the middle for cost and coverage. You must enroll in a Silver plan to use the benefit of any cost sharing reductions you are eligible for.
- Bronze plans are likely to have the lowest monthly premiums, but they pay a lower share of the healthcare services costs you incur.
